In this case, coin is used because of its connotations as raw material and interesting trigger for action. It is related with Spanish artist Marta Pujades research and art practice: the investigation on how we build individual and collective identities and different mediums of expression, specially visual media and portrait. The goal here was to re-design the 2 euros coins “national face”. Along the 2 hours any interested citizen is invited to watch and play: A human face scaled 2 euros coin is supported by two tripods. The King Juan Carlos the First’s face silhouette is on real scale even he is absent, as the artist trimmed off his effigy.

Through the void, participants could substitute the image of his majesty using allowed elements used in European currency design: monuments and architecture, abstract design or European identity elements. Every action was photographed by the artist, creating new artworks and a variety of blinks to reality and fictitious coins.

This action took place after corruption cases in Spanish monarchy were revealed, though most of participants played with king’s image in a peaceful mood even some of them wished to innocently break the rules of what is considered politically correct. Just one month after this action the King of Spain abdicated and in 2014 June the 19th his son Felipe became the new King.
