“Dispelling the property”, by Pan Mengyi. 4 Faces microResidencies Exhibition at Four-Face Space Art Center. Luodai, Chengdu.

Sunday 6th July 2014. 3-5 pm.

Pan Mengyi’s microResidency was carried out in parallel with other three microResidencies. It’s part of the Project 4 Faces microResidencies Exhibition, which took place at Four-Face Space Art Center of Luodai, Chengdu (China) from 4th to 6th July 2014.

Resulting artwork is part of an exhibition at the space quoted, that will be opened from 13th July to 26th August 2014

Proposal (text sent by the artist)*:

“Meaning : I used a way of thinking whether the objects are ‘useful or not ‘, and planed an action of ‘dispelling the significance’, making a transform about ‘useless’ in the process of packaging the scrap, then make a false appearance of ‘useful’. I think people who watch this will understand something I want to express. The key point is how to make my work step by step, and the sense of form.

Preparing:

1 Gather something we called ‘waste’, small, like little hammer, machine parts, zip-top can, and so on. The premise is they are all metal (metal has the property of mechanical, industrial, and certain texture and feel of making), and they must be unique in shape and texture. The number of them is around 30.

2 Little vacuum pump (used for compressing clothes), capper (or candles, iron ruler), transparent plastic packaging bags, about 30.(just the packaging bags used for foods)

3 Polaroid.

4 Self-making video, be similar to the ideogenetic video, objects I gathered will be one of the leading role in what I will shoot. My thought is to make objects I gather to be more image, story board.

For instance, what I gathered representatives ‘useless’, or ‘waste things with aggressiveness’, the way of packaging the waste is actually a process to making ‘useful’, it seems that the ‘useless’ is clearing up, but in fact the whole process is a false appearance that people give to it. But the most interesting part too. The duration is about 5 to 8 minutes.

5 Projector, screen, loudspeaker box

Process:

1 Playing the video, at the same time I will make the vacuum packaging.

2 After the packages are done, I will take some pics by Polaroid, as a part of my work.

3 Selling my work of art to the audiences, in very low price,( make price tags in advance, 5 to 15 Yuan). Selling is just a form, it’s a part of dispelling the property), the true meaning is to make people’s participation. People buy my work of art will take pics with a board, it says ‘Deal’.”

作品题目:《性质剥离》

意义:我运用了思考物品“有用与否”的方式,策划一场“消解意义”

的行为,在给废品重新包装的过程中,进行“无用”的转化,造成

“有用”感觉的假象。其中表达的意思我觉得观众应该能理解到。重

点是作品的分步进行,以及作品形式感的问题。

准备工作:

1. 到废品站收集人们称之为“破铜烂铁”的物品, 小件,比如小钉

锤、机器小零件、易拉罐等等。前提是选择的物体都是金属(金属

自带的性质是机械的、工业的、以及一定的制作感和质感)且具有一

定质感且造型独特等。收集的数量在20 个左右。

2. 抽真空用的汞(自备)、塑料袋封口机(或蜡烛、铁尺) 、20 个

左右的透明塑料包装袋( 就是常见的食品真空包装袋)。

4. 自制影像,类似于观念性的影像制作,收集的素材是拍摄主角之

一,目前的想法是将作品中各种物品意象化,分镜头拍摄。比如收

集的金属代表“ 无用”,或者是“ 有攻击性的废品”,将废品包装

起来的过程实际上又是一个贴上“ 有用”标签的过程,看似“ 无

用”的意义消解,实际上一切都是人为赋予的假象,但是整个作品

制作过程中的行为才是最有意思的。时长在五分钟到八分钟。

5. 投影仪、屏幕、音箱。

过程:

1.影像播放的同时、将收集的素材进行展示,目前想到的方法是悬

挂起来。

与此同时进行物品的真空包装,用到真空汞和封口工具,封完一个再

将其摆回展示架上。

2.在包装基本制作完毕时,用拍立得拍照( 拍立得照片现场可取而
