“Greed”, by Liu Chengxiu. 4 Faces microResidencies Exhibition at Four-Face Space Art Center. Luodai, Chengdu.
Saturday 5th July 2014. 3-5 pm.
Liu Chengxiu’s microResidency was carried out in parallel with other two microResidencies. It’s part of the Project 4 Faces microResidencies Exhibition, which took place at Four-Face Space Art Center of Luodai, Chengdu (China) from 4th to 6th July 2014.
Resulting artwork is part of an exhibition at the space quoted, that will be opened from 13th July to 26th August 2014
Proposal (text sent by artist)*:
“Theme: Greed, touch, human nature, envy
Materials: Human body (breasts, hands, faces, and so on). They may be true, and fake. Money, some daily supplies, different skins, hairs or some things rarely seen.
Build a little half closed space in my space, (before the exhibition), materials and volunteers in it .The little space is all sides, and two holes on two sides, which just fit for one hand stretching into it.
Write the “name” of the objects inside beside the holes. Let audiences choose which one to touch, and let them guess whether it’s true or not.
The other two sides of the space will open up 10 or more little holes.
Put some hairs and something rare in it and write some words beside the holes (it says “Everyone has got 2 chances to touch.) Let audiences stretches into the hole and shoot their expressions, and body language, gestures of hands .Final, edit those fragments into a section of video, play it on the day of the exhibition, and set the same space in the gallery, let audiences to experience this.
Meaning: Greed, people cannot get enough, they always want more even though they’ve got everything. Greed, envy, desires, curiousness. Greed has various excuses, just like evil.
This is a kind of an experiment too, people get curious when they face something they don’t know, and they feel the new things by touching them. And it needs to judge whether it’s true or not. And things we choose to touch are things we hide in the daily life. I want to know how people react too. If they only got two chances to touch in the gallery, they might be more curious. And what if people only get tactile impression in life, would all the things be true?”
